Parking for Sunday Worship

First Baptist entered into a land/lease agreement with a developer on the site of the former church parking lot to build an office building. Per the terms of the agreement, the church remains the owner of the land while the developer owns the building, SCHENLEY PLACE. In exchange, the church receives monthly payments, which will help us preserve the historic church building entrusted to our care. In addition, the church receives limited parking rights in the parking garage under the office building, which will include free parking for Sunday worship. Construction is nearing completion and access to the parking garage should be available in the near future, spring 2016.

Until then, you have three options for  parking:

1)  Street parking is available on Sunday.

2)  Arrangements have been made for Sunday worship only, to park for free within the same block, in the lot toward Fifth Avenue that is adjacent to Ruskin Hall and behind the Pitt Music Building.

3)  About a dozen spaces are available in the church circle driveway off Bellefield Avenue. For Sunday worship, please reserve these spaces for elderly, handicapped or those with difficulty walking.

Directions within the City

Bellefield Ave. runs in front of Heinz Chapel connecting Forbes Ave. (coming out of town) and Fifth Ave. (going toward town).  North of Fifth Ave, Bellefield is a two-way street that ends at Centre Ave.

The traffic light at Bayard St. is the only light between Fifth Ave. and Centre Ave.

The church parking lot is on the Bayard St. side.  There is also a traffic light next to the driveway of the parking lot, where Bayard St. becomes Bigelow Blvd. moving toward UPMC and the University of Pittsburgh or toward Schenley High School en route to downtown.

Directions from the Interstate Highways

From the North:

Simply stated instructions for coming in from the North on I-79 would be to exit on I-279 and follow it across the Veterans Bridge following the signs for the Consol Energy Center, then for Bigelow Blvd. Follow Bigelow Blvd bearing right at the third traffic light, where there is a fork in the road and then continue until it intersects Bigelow  At the intersection you will see Schenley Place directly in front of you and the church to the left.

More detailed directions follow:

I-79 South bypasses Pittsburgh. From the North take Exit 72 / I-279 toward Pittsburgh.  The two right lanes become 579.   Take Exit 8A / Veterans Bridge, and as the bridge becomes three-lane, stay in the middle lane. At the end of the bridge bear right from the center lane and follow signs for 6th Ave /Consol Energy Center (7th Ave is the far right lane). Near the end of the exit ramp, a left lane joins traffic.  Move into that left lane, and turn left at the traffic light, staying in the middle lane.  At the next light, at the end of this bridge, turn left as though leaving town, but then right onto 380 East / Bigelow Blvd.  Follow Bigelow - at the third light bear right to stay on Bigelow, cross Centre Ave. with a view of the former Schenley High School on the left.  Continue around Schenley, downhill, and at the traffic light, Schenley Place will be directly in front of you with the church to the left.

From the East:

Take I-376 (Parkway West) into the city. Take the second exit after the Squirrel Hill tunnel, Exit 3B Oakland (Bates St.). Go up Bates St. and continue straight ahead until the end of Bates St. Turn left on Bouquet St. Go to the first light and turn right on Forbes Ave. Continue to the second light, at the far corner of the Pitt Cathedral of Learning block, (the end of the one way section of Forbes). Turn left on S. Bellefield.  Cross Fifth Ave. and the church is at the next intersection Bellefield Ave. & Bayard St.

From the South & West:

I-79 North is the interstate. Take Exit 59A / 279 North / 376 East toward Pittsburgh. Continue through the Fort Pitt tunnel and across the bridge. Immediately at the Pittsburgh end of the bridge take the first exit, turning right onto 376 East. Take the first exit to the right, the Exit 2A /Forbes Ave./Oakland. Once on Forbes, it is about ten blocks to S. Bellefield, at the far corner of the Pitt Cathedral of Learning block, (the end of the one way section of Forbes). Turn left on S. Bellefield.  Cross Fifth Ave. and the church is at the next intersection Bellefield Ave. & Bayard St.

From South Hills:

Cross the Liberty Bridge, and take either the first exit leading toward Blvd. of the Allies, and then exit onto Forbes Ave. until the Cathedral of Learning on your left.  Turn left onto Bellefield Ave, cross Fifth Ave., and the next intersection the church is on the left corner.

Or - cross the Liberty Bridge, and take the second exit leading to 579 / 279 North, and then exit onto Bigelow Blvd. before entering the Veterans Bridge.  At the third traffic light, bear right right to stay on Bigelow, cross Centre Ave. with a view of Schenley High School on the left.  Continue around Schenley, downhill, and at the traffic light you will see Schenley Place directly in front of you with the church to the left.
